Toxicology: Poisonings, Overdoses and Exposures

Overdoses, inadvertent ingestions and exposures, and adverse drug events are common with the Emergency Department being the primary entry point for care of these patients.

The Saskatchewan Poison Centre (aka: Poison and Drug Information Service, PADIS) receives upwards of 1000 calls a month to aid in caring for these patients. They can be reached any time at the new national poison centre number 1-844-POISON-X (1-844-764-7669), or at their old number 1-866-454-1212

ACLS/BLS/PALS Renewal

As the Provincial Toxicology Lead, I hope to continue to foster educational opportunities for the province. If your department (MDs, RNs, or both) would like a dedicated session to cover high yield or specific toxicology topics for your site, please feel free to reach out to my and we can organize a learning session.

Sessions are already being provided for the Royal University Hospital ED Trauma/Resuscitation nursing onboarding training.

Additionally, if you have any clinical questions or would like to discuss a topic or a case individually, I am happy to answer and discuss. Please contact myself through my SHA email address.

Do you have any ideas or requests for future toxicology tidbits? Please send your ideas to riley.hartmann@saskhealthauthority.ca.

Toxicology Tidbits are meant to be case based, brief 1-2 page briefs on specific areas of toxicology to help dispel myths, share general management and approaches to toxicologic presentations, and describe the physiology and pharmacology behind the why and how of toxicologic presentations.
