Geriatrics: Older Adults in the Emergency Department

Older adults in Saskatchewan are a core emergency department user group, accounting for 20-30% of all ED visits across the province. They remain longer in the emergency department, have more investigations, and higher rates of admission. Unfortunately, older adults also have increased morbidity, and mortality and increased rates of unanticipated return ED visits.

Our goal is to elevate the care of older ED users throughout Saskatchewan through the development and sharing of relevant best practice material which is evidence based and high quality.

Message from Saskatchewan Physician Lead for Geriatric Emergency Medicine:

Dear Colleagues,

I am thrilled to welcome you to our new page dedicated to providing valuable evidence and resources in Geriatric Emergency Medicine. As the provincial lead of geriatric emergency medicine for the past 5 years, I recognize the unique challenges and needs presented by our older adults in Saskatchewan, especially in emergency department, and I am working hard to improve their care through the development of order sets, continuing medical education, research and advocacy.

This page is designed to be a hub of knowledge, offering access to research, clinical guidelines, and best practices tailored specifically for care of older adults in the ED. Our goal is to enhance the quality of care for older adults by equipping our healthcare providers with the tools and information they need to make informed decisions.

I encourage you to explore the website, engage with the resources available, and share your feedback. Your input is invaluable as we strive to improve our offerings and adapt to the ever-evolving needs of our geriatric population. You can contact me with your ideas, thoughts or feedback at B.Ellis@usask.ca.

Thank you for your commitment to providing excellent care to our elderly patients. Together, we can make a significant difference in the experiences and outcomes of older emergency department users.

Warm regards,

Dr Brittany Ellis
